Marguerite, a deep breath of magnificent chaos
The story of Marguerite Gachet and Vincent Van Gogh is a fable for some people and a real love story for some others. However you think, the feelings of Marguerite where true and deep. This is the tale of a strong-willed woman who was ready to leave her homeland to follow her dreams of becoming a painter. Against all odds, it was at home that she found love and decided to stay to fight for it.
Folie de Marguerite is a mossy wood fragrance with a remarkable powdery top note of dark iris like the ones that van Gogh painted. We are reminded of the sweet and passionate character of Marguerite Gachet with magnolia and saffron as we prepare to enter the artist’s atelier. Here, we are surrounded by the deep balsamic notes of Oud, reminiscent of the other woods that make up Dr Gachet’s garden: cedars and oaks. Embellishing the skin, tuberose combine with myrrh and white oud to turn into sa resinous and mossy undertone.
The story of this mossy woods fragrances is found in the unexpected turn of events in the life of Marguerite Gachet. It is the story of a strong girl who dreams about becoming a painter in a world where women are forbidden to.
She was surrounded by master paintings since her birth, as her father, art lover Doctor Gachet was accepting paintings in exchange for the services he rendered to the artists he was treating. To overcome her fate and breach the glass ceiling that would forbid her to achieve her dream of becoming a painter, Marguerite devised a plan. On her 21st birthday she would leave her home to embark for the land of opportunity: The United States of America. Before she could execute her plan, a psychologically troubled impressionist painter followed by her father enters her life. His name is Vincent van Gogh and she falls in love with him. He is older than her and obsessed about one thing: his passion for paintings. Against all odds and thanks to her patience, they end up having a romantic affair which convinces her to change her mind and stay home, close to him. She was convinced that his love for her was real and her dream became to escape from her father’s influence and live happily ever after with the painter. But van Gogh plans were different as his obsession intensified and he entered one the most creative times of his life. Together they went in a spiral of ever increasing hopes and deceptions that would eventually culminate in the painter’s suicide. Some say that the love story of Marguerite Gachet and Vincent van Gogh was real, some say it was only a fantasy in Marguerite’s mind, but what was for certain was her intense love for him. So intense in fact that she lost her mind to it and she believes it contributed to her lover’s unfortunate fate. Was it because her father forbid the relationship because she was too young and he committed suicide out of his love for her? Or was it her who killed him? Was it the doctor who protected his daughter by letting him take his life instead of helping him? Or had the Gachet family had nothing to do with his death? No one will know for sure, but no one will question that they met and he picked her as a muse for his paintings. The famous Marguerite Gachet in the Garden or Marguerite Gachet at the Piano are evidence. He also mentions her in a letter to his brother even though he never admitted to being fond of her. Marguerite Gachet’s life is a story about passion, and about whichever one she chose, she lived it to the fullest intensity.
